Lightning Strikes by Mary Lynn Baxter
The book was excellant, but left the reader hanging with several characters with problems unsolved. An amnesia victim, bride leaving the alter following an altercation with guns, etc. Is there a sequel?

Lone Star Heat
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (September, 1997)
Author: Mary Baxter
Average review score:

Fine work by this up-and-coming superstar
Texas Ranger Gates O'Brien lives for his job of investigating crime ever since he and TV journalist Juliana Reed divorced eleven years ago. His current case is to look into state corruption just as his brother Rusk is campaigning to become the next governor of the Lone Star State. During a political debate, one of her guests, Marge Bowers, a close friend of Juliana and a worker for Rusk, suddenly dies on the air. This incident places Juliana and her show in the news, but she is more concerned over the murder of Marge.

Gates and Juliana decide to join forces to uncover the identity of the killer. As they get closer to learning who the culprit is, they find themselves buried in blackmail and political corruption that includes Gates' family. The attraction and love which drew them together over a decade ago, still exists, but even more so. However, as they try to solve a murder, the couple also has to confront the problem that destroyed their marriage before they can start a new (and hopefully) healthier relationship.

Mary Lynn Baxter is renowned for her exciting romantic suspense novels and her latest book, LONE STAR HEAT, will add to her growing reputation. The story line is interesting as the backside of political power is exposed. The lead characters are a wonderful pair coping with the case and their own personal problems. Fans of romantic intrigue will enjoy this beautiful Baxter book.

Average review score:

Drawn from over 300 interviews
Making Their Own Way follows the journeys of young adults who participated in a unique longitudinal study of 101 male and female college students begun in 1986 by Marcia Magolda. Drawn from over 300 interviews taken from graduation to their early thirties, we see through the participants' own stories the role of higher education as a preparation for participation in contemporary life outside academia. Magolda provides both observation and analysis as she derives a new framework for higher education designed to achieve better stewarding and fostering of students during the journey of transformation and maturation attendant to the years of higher education experience. An experience whose totality aspires to better prepare these men and women to assume leadership roles in the opening decades of the twenty-first century. Making Their Own Way is strongly recommended reading for educators concerned with the holistic development of their students and higher education's role in foster critical thinking, citizenship, and civic leadership.

Mother Goose: The Children's Classic Edition
Published in Hardcover by Courage Books (March, 1997)
Authors: Leon Baxter, Graham Percy, Gary Rees, Kay Widdowson, Jenny Williams, and Courage Books
Average review score:

the best I've read
I have three really nice, big hardbound mother goose anthologies, but this is my favorite; contains the most popular of the mother goose nursery rhymes, has brightly colored pictures, but, most importantly, is user-friendly. It's thin and light, and when my son and I sat down for nursery rhymes (over and over and over!) this was the book that kept getting pulled off the shelf. I recommend it very very highly.

Noisy Little Truck

A story that captures the attention of little readers
This book is great for even the smallest reader. My son started listening to me read this book to him at 18months and now at 2, it is still his favorite. It's story holds the attention of small children by its exciting tale and is also the perfect size for small hands to hold and control. The pictures are simple yet interesting and there is the right amount of text on each page which is easy for little minds to understand. I am looking for all the books of this type to keep as a collection. An absolute story book for the bookshelf of young ones.

Find 20 misplaced objects from the future and learn history
History is combined with science fiction in a fascinating adventure in which twenty objects from some time in the future are placed in a historic setting, such as a toy robot in ancient Egypt. There are thirteen adventures painted beautifully and written in an exciting way. My students looks forward to being able to "solve" one the the pages as a reward for a good lesson. What a fantastic way to teach history! I can't praise this book enough. So much effort went into producing it. I recommend it for all ages.

Plains Song: For Female Voices
Published in Paperback by Bison Bks Corp (October, 2000)
Authors: Wright Morris and Charles Baxter
Average review score:

There goes another one.
A fine novel, a masterpiece of concision, considering the breadth of the story. What saddens me is that there are no other Morris novels in print. This one is no better or worse than any of his other wonderful novels, but evidently rates publication because it has the word "female" in the title. His best novel, The Field of Vision, also won the National Book award.
